"Galasso plays craftily with time and our expectations... with brainy wit and flashes of profundity."

I, HOUDINI is an evening-length dance theater spectacle in which the spirit of Harry Houdini is conjured by Karla Quintero, dance-artist, horror-enthusiast, daughter of immigrants. A show within a show, intended for audiences of mixed ages and backgrounds, it explores devotion to craft, transcendence of circumstance, and collective catharsis.
Quintero, together with choreographer Catherine Galasso & sound designer Dave Cerf, will pair dance, voice, live foley, and film with historical context, illusion, and performance endurance to create a mercurial world in which Houdini/Quintero interrogate their past selves and become one. Vaudevillian slapstick will layer with postmodern self-reference and meta-memoir. Humor, nostalgia, and wonder will echo throughout.
Developed so far with support from the Loghaven Artist Residency (TN), we envision this intimate genre-collapsing performance to premiere in San Francisco in 2026 followed by performances in New York and other cities through 2029.
